Adaptation Along the Coast

The adaptation of coastal areas to climate change was the focus of one of the conference’s technical sessions, which centered on the need to anticipate the impacts of rising sea levels, coastal flooding, and other extreme events

During the session, Iñigo Losada, Professor of Hydraulic Engineering at the University of Cantabria, presented the methodologies and tools designed to support decision-making by public administrations by integrating climate, territorial, environmental, and socioeconomic information. Through various case studies, examples were presented of measures such as beach restoration and conservation, the protection and restoration of dune systems, the incorporation of nature-based solutions, and the planning of flood protection infrastructure. The session highlighted the importance of combining scientific knowledge, long-term planning, and collaboration among public authorities to increase the resilience of coastal areas and facilitate the prioritization of investments in adaptation.
