Towards climate neutrality

citiES 2030 promotes the decarbonization of Spanish cities within the framework of the European Union Missions.

Background to of citiES 2030

citiES 2030 is the natural culmination of a long development of dialogues and partnerships over the past years between several organizations that have been working closely for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals.

  1. 2019 –.

    EIT Climate-KIC launches its "Transformation in time" aiming to create the conditions for healthier, net-zero emission cities.

  2. 2019 –.

    Madrid is selected as one of the fifteen "DeepDemonstration" cities.

  3. 2020 –.

    El Día Después" is launched, a multi-stakeholder platform consisting of four knowledge communities, including the "City Transformation Community".

  4. 2021 –.

    The European Commission launches "European Missions" and the European platform NetZeroCities, a project aimed at designing the foundations to support cities on the road to climate neutrality by 2030.

  5. 2021 –.

    From the Cities Transformation Community, citiES 2030 was born - made up of Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Soria, Valencia, Valladolid and Vitoria-Gasteiz - with the purpose of implementing the Mission of Cities in Spain.

  6. 2021 –.

    On Sep. 8, Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Soria, and Valencia sign their Pre-Climate City Contracts, an institutional declaration to implement the European Mission of Cities, which Valladolid, Vitoria-Gasteiz and Zaragoza join on Dec. 13.

  7. 2021 –.

    On September 15, the full Senate approved, with broad support (237 votes in favor), the motion to promote the climate neutrality of Spanish cities within the framework of the European Cities Mission and the citiES 2030 initiative.

  8. 2022 –.

    The EU Commission officially announces the cities selected for the Mission of the Cities and seven Spanish cities that were part of the citiES 2030 initiative are selected.

  9. 2023 –.

    Following the submission of the Climate City Contracts by the seven Spanish cities, the EU Commission announces in April that 5 of the first 10 cities to obtain the Mission label are Spanish (Madrid, Valencia, Valladolid, Vitoria-Gasteiz and Zaragoza). Barcelona and Seville are in the process of evaluating their Climate City Contracts.
